A weak or dead coin cell is behind almost every "my remote stopped working" call. We come to you anywhere in Richmond, install the correct fob battery, test every button, and re-sync the fob to your car if it dropped its pairing.
A dying key fob battery rarely means a broken fob — it means a coin cell that's run flat. We carry the common sizes, replace them on-site anywhere in Richmond, and make sure your remote and push-to-start work exactly like they should before we leave.
When your key fob's range drops off — you have to be right next to the car, or touching the door handle, before it'll lock or unlock — the culprit is almost always a fading lithium coin cell, not a failed fob. We open the case with the right tool (no cracked shells or snapped clips), install the exact battery your fob was built for, clean the contacts, and test every function. If the fob happened to drop its pairing while power was off, we re-sync it to your vehicle in the same visit.
Most car fobs run on a flat lithium "coin" or "button" cell. The number stamped on it — CR2032, CR2025, CR1620, CR1616 — is simply its size, not a brand: the first two digits are the diameter in millimetres, the last two are the thickness in tenths of a millimetre. A CR2032 is 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick; a CR2025 is the same width but thinner; a CR1616 is smaller both ways. They are not interchangeable — a too-thin cell rattles and loses contact, a too-thick one won't let the case close. We match the exact cell your fob was designed for and don't guess.
| Service | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Single fob battery swap | $10–$25 |
| Two fobs / household pair at one visit | $18–$40 |
| Proximity / smart (push-to-start) fob battery | $15–$35 |
| Battery swap + contact clean & reseat | $20–$45 |
| Battery + re-sync / re-pair to the vehicle | $40–$95 |
| Fob unresponsive after a new battery (diagnosis) | Quoted on-site |
The cells themselves are inexpensive — the value in a mobile visit is that we come to you, open the fob without cracking it, install the correct battery, and confirm the fob still talks to your car. Because we're a mobile service, a battery-only call usually carries a small minimum, which is why many customers pair it with a spare key cut or a second fob at the same stop. We confirm the total on the phone before we roll — no surprises when we arrive.
Tell us your year, make and model so we bring the right cell. We give you a firm price on the call and let you know if your fob is one of the few that may need re-syncing after the swap.
A mobile tech meets you wherever the vehicle is — a driveway in Broadmoor, an underground stall at Aberdeen Centre, or a surface lot on Sea Island near YVR. No driving to a kiosk hoping they stock your size.
We open the fob, fit the correct battery, clean the contacts, and test every button. If the fob dropped its pairing, we re-enrol it to your car before we leave — start, lock, unlock, remote, all confirmed.
For the majority of vehicles, swapping the battery is a two-minute job and every button keeps working the moment the new cell is in. But on some models — certain European makes and older smart-key systems — cutting power for too long can drop the fob's pairing with the car's immobiliser. The result is a fob that unlocks the doors but won't start the engine, or one that stops responding entirely. When that happens the fob has to be re-synced or re-enrolled to the vehicle, which takes the right programming tool. We carry that gear, so if your fob loses its pairing during the swap we fix it on the spot instead of sending you to the dealership.
A basic CR2032 swap on a common Japanese or domestic flip key is a fair DIY job — find the seam, pop the case with a coin or plastic pry tool, match the cell, and snap it shut. Where people get into trouble is prying at the wrong point and cracking the shell, buying the wrong cell size, bending the tiny battery clip, or reassembling a proximity fob so the water seal no longer sits right. If your fob is a sealed push-to-start smart key, is glued or ultrasonically welded shut, or has already stopped working after you tried a fresh battery, that's the point to call us. A replacement fob costs far more than a battery, and a cracked case invites the moisture that kills them.
A fob that only works when you're pressed against the car is easy to ignore — until it strands you in a YVR parking structure, a Sea Island hotel lot, or a rainy underground stall at Richmond Centre. We come to you anywhere in Richmond, so you're not driving to a mall kiosk hoping they carry your cell. From Steveston to City Centre, Aberdeen Centre to Ironwood Plaza, we bring the batteries and the tools to wherever your car is parked.
Richmond weather is hard on fobs — damp delta winters and salt air off the Fraser corrode battery contacts faster than a dry climate would. If your remote has been sluggish through the wet season, it's worth a fresh cell and a contact clean before it fails at the worst moment. We can do it in the driveway in a few minutes, and cut you a mechanical spare while we're there so a dead fob never means a dead-in-the-water morning.
A dead battery is the easy end of car-key trouble. Here's the rest — same truck, same licensed tech.
